Long Arm Classes

PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION ON REGISTRATION UNDER "SHOW: INFORMATION" BEFORE REGISTERING TO AVOID MISTAKES THAT MAY DELAY YOUR REGISTRATION. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE TIMES OF THE LECTURES AND CLASSES SO YOU DON'T ACCIDENTALLY CHOOSE CLASSES OR LECTURES THAT OVERLAP. IF YOU DO, IT WILL RESERVE YOUR SPACE IN BOTH AND WILL RESULT IN YOU BEING CHARGED FOR BOTH ITEMS. WHEN REQUESTING A REFUND, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO CHARGE THE ADMINISTRATIVE CHARGE OUTLINED IN OUR POLICIES TO RETURN THE CLASS/LECTURE TO INVENTORY.

Supply Lists may be found at the end of each class description or by clicking "Supply List" for a downloadable pdf you can print out. No other supply lists will be sent unless indicated in the description. Kit and/or pattern fees are to be paid to the instructor at the time of the class unless stated otherwise.

Lecture and evening activities can be found towards the bottom of this page. Right below the class descriptions are the times of the class, the cost of the class (not counting any kit/pattern/handout fees) and the total available spaces left in the class.

Irons and Ironing boards are furnished for those workshops needing them.

Abbreviations used in the supply lists:

BSS: Basic Sewing Supplies: needles, thread to match project, pins, marking  pencil/pens, ruler, seam ripper, thimble, needles threader, fabric scissors, paper scissors.

RCM: Rotary cutter and mat (large mats are better), ruler (6" x 24" unless specified different measurements)

SM: Sewing machine in good order with extra bobbins, extension cord, manual, threads to match fabric. If an asterisk (*) appears beside SM, then it means that there are machines already furnished for this class.

PPS: Note taking paper, drawing paper (unlined), lead pencil, eraser, ruler, paper scissors, masking tape, Scotch tape, glue stick.

 





 

  

LA011 FREE MOTION POSSIBILITIES FOR THE TRUE BEGINNER - Sue Patten

This HANDS ON class is designed to inspire and assist beginners to become confident with their ability to use free motion designs and techniques for themselves and their clients. This class is packed full of info for the starting longarmer. While mastering the skill of free motion quilting, we will discuss threads, tension, how batting affects the overall look of the quilt and where to place these new design concepts on the quilt to achieve three degrees of texture and balance. These designs offer a quick, easy and accurate way to finish any quilt top., So put away those marking tools and turn off that laser light and join us for this free motion party! Kit fee of $15 includes batting, backing, top fabric, thread and handout.

LA012 SIMPLE SASHING & BORDER DESIGNS - Sue Patten

It doesn't have to be hard to look spectacular! This HANDS ON class is designed with the new longarm quilter in mind and offers quick and easy free motion design ideas that will wow any client or judge. The designs taught in class are not your everyday feather or fern: they are unique concepts that will compliment any quilt top that comes your way. We will discuss three degrees of quilting, when to "stitch in the ditch" and when to "ditch the stitch," how to handle the cornerstones, tension, and how batting affects the overall end result of the quilt top. Come explore the new age of free motion sashings and borders and learn to tackle those quilts with flair and confidence. Kit fee of $15 includes batting, backing, top fabric, thread and handout.

LA013 TIPS & TRICKS - Sue Patten

After years of longarm quilting, Sue has developed a few skills that she would like to share. In this demo/lecture, she will cover mounting and floating, squaring off a quilt so it is square every time, regardless of how "not so square" it may have been when it arrived. She will show ways of manipulating fabric on those not-so-perfect tops to make them lay flat without causing pucker or pleat or stress. She will share her tips on getting perfect tension with every type of thread on every machine brand, and using the right size needle for the thread and fabric you are working with, using 3 degrees of tension to achieve the perfect look for every quilt, how to make your borders look like they were quilted with no stop and starts without ever turning your quilt... and so much more! So come join Sue and learn tips and tricks that are sure to have you smiling and saying "No problem, I can quilt that out..."  Handout fee of $5 payable to instructor at time of class. This HANDS ON class has been brought back by popular demand and pulled out of retirement ... of course, Sue has updated some of the designs and added new ones to the mix as her unique and innovative personality demands. This is a free motion class filled with alternative designs to the oh-so-tired feather. With new spine ideas and the added touch of inside fillers, these designs can be used to wow both traditional and cutting edge quilters alike. This class is for anyone considering the purchase of a longarm quilting machine.  We will go through the many FAB's (Features, Advantages, Benefits) you should consider when purchasing a longarm quilting system.  This class will help you understand what questions to ask and what you should consider while doing your research of the many varieties available in today's market. There are so many things to consider whether you are considering a machine for business or simply for quilting for personal use. You will leave this class prepared with the information needed to make the right choice by understanding what to ask,  allowing you to make a sound educated decision based on your specific wants and needs.

LA024 THE BEAST IN MY BASEMENT - Valerie Schlake and Michelle Eno

Geared toward the" brand new" owner in need of  "New Longarm Owner Training." This class will help get you started on your way to successful longarm quilting. Beginning with the basic care and feeding of the Beast (Basic Maintenance). You will learn the different ways to load a quilt properly and why keeping things square is so important. Helpful tools that promise to make your life easier plus a host of other "new owner" concerns when getting started.  Bring your questions and get answers. The designs used in this class may also be enlarged to create wonderful all over designs and can be incorporated to fit into small sashings and cornerstones. This class was developed because of so many have requested an open forum venue to discuss topics surrounding their own personal longarm businesses . If you are in business or considering a longarm business, join Valerie and Michelle as they facilitate this roundtable discussion and share their personal journey building longarm quilting business and making a profit.  Come with notes, questions and ideas to share with the group.  We can all learn from each other as we share during this forum. There is one thing for sure, get a group of quilters in a room, and we promise you will become inspired and filled with new ideas to get your business on track!
